As of August 2026: Form OL 56 lets certain wholesale-only dealers apply for exemption from the standard $50,000 dealer bond requirement, confirmed directly via DMV's own dealer license renewal documentation.

The Old Way

This exemption was historically filed as a paper form alongside a mailed renewal packet (OL 45), reviewed manually before DMV granted or denied the exemption.

The New Way

The exemption is now requested through the same Digital Experience Platform used for renewals generally, via MyDMV account at dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/occupational-licensing/login — filed alongside your digital renewal rather than mailed separately.

Who files it: wholesale-only dealers who qualify under DMV's exemption criteria. Don't assume this matches the separate 50-vehicle threshold used for the Continuing Education Exemption (OL 257) — these are different exemptions tied to different requirements. Confirm the exemption criteria directly with DMV before relying on it.

What trips people up: confusing this bond exemption with the continuing education exemption (OL 257) — two separate applications addressing two different requirements. Qualifying for one doesn't automatically mean you qualify for the other, digital filing or not.

What happens next: DMV reviews your eligibility within the digital system before the exemption is granted — don't assume exemption is automatic just because you believe you qualify.
