As of August 2026: Form OL 257 lets wholesale-only dealers who sold fewer than 50 vehicles in the preceding 12-month period apply for exemption from the standard continuing education requirement tied to license renewal.
Like other renewal-adjacent forms, OL 257 used to be filed on paper alongside a mailed renewal application, with timing entirely dependent on mail transit and manual DMV review.
This exemption is now requested through DMV's Digital Experience Platform, filed alongside your digital renewal application via MyDMV account at dmv.ca.gov/portal/vehicle-industry-services/occupational-licensing/login — with electronic status updates replacing the old wait-for-a-mailed-response process.
What trips people up: filing late, or after the renewal deadline has already passed — this is just as timing-sensitive in the digital system as it was on paper. Missing the window can mean completing continuing education you were otherwise eligible to skip, simply because the request wasn't filed on time. Missing signatures or incomplete fields remain common, avoidable rejection reasons even in the digital form.
What happens next: once filed and approved alongside your renewal (OL 45), the continuing education requirement is waived for that renewal cycle. This does not exempt you from other renewal requirements, like the dealer bond itself or the base renewal fee.
